“Have you seen this man? He owes Karen Newby a thousand shiny pennies. If you see him, contact the authorities immediately.”

I chuckle at the poster. “Whose number is that? Who are they supposed to contact?”

“It’s the sheriff’s work line. He owes me ten dollars for losing a bet we made not too long ago. I would like to be paid in pennies. Preferably shiny ones.”

“What was the bet?” Marianne inquires after a long sip of water.

Karen straightens her shirt. “He bet me that I couldn’t pass my driver’s test when my license expired, and I did. Ha!”

I snort at her antics. “No, you can’t post that now.”

Karen looks down at her fingers. “Messing with Louis is my favorite sport. I can’t very well do it now. It wouldn’t be very sportsmanlike.”

I give her a halfhearted chuckle. “Getting on the sheriff’s last nerve all the time isn’t a sport.”

Karen raises her nose. “It is if you do it right.”

The sound of Agnes’ knitting needles fills the air for a few beats before I speak. “I can’t believe the sheriff of our town might actually go to jail. I know he couldn’t possibly have done it.”

Agnes keeps her eyes on her knitting while she speaks. “He could very well have poisoned Ivan, but Karen is right; there’s no reason why he would have done it. He had nothing against a perfect stranger.”

I keep my voice quiet as Aunt Winnie meanders back into the living room, leaning her hip on Agnes’ chair. “The police are going to find out on Monday whether Ivan was poisoned or if he was bumped in the back of the neck at just the wrong angle.”

Winifred shakes her head, sealed envelope in hand. “We need to widen our suspects. We’re narrowing our focus in on one of two people, but it could be far wider a net than that. We don’t truly know Ivan, other than the cursory poking around at the gym we’ve done.”

Agnes shakes her head. “I can’t manage even a guess at who could have done something like that.”

My phone chirps, so I answer the call only because it’s Logan. “Hey, there.” I bring Logan into our conversation without missing a beat. “Aunt Winnie got an envelope as her part of her prize for winning the weightlifting competition. We’re guessing at what the prize might be. Any conjectures from you?”

“A watermelon,” Logan replies flatly.

“It’s in an envelope.”

“Then imagine my surprise if they managed to shove a watermelon inside. You got a second?” he asks.

“Many seconds.” I stand with much effort and move up the stairs into my bedroom, where we can speak without being disruptive to the brainstorming crackling in the living room. “What’s going on?”

“I need you to tell me not to do what I’m doing. What I’ve already done.”

A shadow crosses over any levity that Karen’s poster instilled in my soul. “Logan, what are you talking about?” My heart rate picks up, my voice hushed as I say a silent prayer that Logan isn’t getting himself into trouble.
